Packing Tips:
Collecting packing supplies
- Beware of used boxes – people sometimes try to pack belongings in used boxes to save money. BEWARE – produce boxes often become weakened from the moisture of transportation or product spoilage. Additionally, insects often nest in used boxes. Most store boxes are not designed for moving.
- Use movers packing tape only – seal boxes with packing tape.
- Wardrobe moving boxes – These hanging boxes are large and do not fit in Auto’s. Best if you have your movers bring on day of moving.
- Special cartons – Picture/mirror, flat screen TV cartons – These are items best left to your mover to supply & pack on moving day.
Remember to label all boxes with their contents and/or destination using a thick black marker pen - especially fragile items!
Large items - If you are going to dismantle any larger pieces remember to tape the screws and fittings to the items that they were removed from. Remove heavy items from chest drawers and put into cartons.
Smaller items - should all be placed in boxes to allow for efficient stacking in the van or storage units.
China and glass - should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper and placed into boxes with a layer of bubble wrap/paper at the top and bottom of the box. Please note that using newspaper may mark your belongings.
Plates and saucers - should ideally be wrapped and placed on their edge within the box.
Books - should be stored in smaller boxes to keep the weight to a manageable level.
Clothing - We can supply space saving International laydown or wardrobe cartons for all your hanging items. Clothing must be clean and dry and alternatively can be stored within boxes, drawers or suitcases.
Electrical items - are best stored in their original boxes, however, if these are unavailable then wrapping them in bubble wrap or newsprint should be sufficient.
Garden equipment - Garden tools must be thoroughly cleaned and free of soil.
Drain gasoline from all gas-powered equipment (lawnmower, chainsaws saws, etc.)
International laws forbid the transportation of flammable items. Do not ship matches, paint, cleaning and lighting fluids, laundry detergents, aerosols, candles or any other combustible matter. Do not ship food of any kind, firearms or ammunition!
